Specifically, the area close to the river between the bridge and the tunnel? I'm looking at apartments there along Riverside and University Avenue West; can anyone tell me what those streets/areas are like? I'm a male student that attends university in Detroit.
I would have to say aim for Riverside drive. University SUCKS along that whole stretch with all the shady folk and whatnot. It's rundown Chinatown. You will also find that the area is populated with alot of student rentals, so you're looking at loud parties, and people peeing outside your balcony. If you're closer to downtown, as in "the core", it's fine, but will be noisey on weekends.
I think downtown and old Walkerville would have the best apartments in the central city. The centre of the city would be best, the areas just on the fringe of the core wouldn't be desirable and wouldn't have many choice appt. rentals available.
I think it would be helpful if we knew what your budget for rent was.
