My deepest sympathy. My lady also does not walk all that well any more.

Instead of Canada would you want to try a river boat trip up the Mississippi? Or a slow drive up the Natchez Trace to Nashville.

Unfortunately, airfares tend to be higher in the late summer (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I would maybe look into travelling to Nova Scotia in May. The weather may still be chilly and rainy at times, but nothing too bad.
