Ted Cruz, a United States Senator is gearing up for the race for the US Presidency. He was born in Canada and is required to renounce his Canadian citizenship if he wants to run.
I think Canada should renounce him before he renounces Canada!
I can't read this link at work because it is blocked. But I don't really care if he renounces his Canadian citizenship to advance his political career in the US. Canada is not really his home as far as I understand.
That's good. Born on Canadian soil, but he has never been a real Canadian and always been a real American. He's an admitted Cuban, Irish, Italian, Canadian, American Southern Baptist republican raised in Texas and never been interested in Canada or his Canadian birth rights. If he wants to be POTUS it makes perfect sense for him to renounce any Canadian birth rights if it will improve his chances at candidacy for the presidency.
The irony here is that a lot of people considered Obama "ineligible for president" because they thought he was born in Kenya, but these same people will be supporting Ted Cruz if he wins the Republican nomination.
Cruz's Dad sounds like a real winner and potentially a communist illegal alien to the USA.

Not sure how denouncing your Canadian citizenship negates the fact that you were born in Canada and are therefore a Canadian citizen and thereby ineligible to run for President of the USA.

I agree. But you know what ..... some people are just missing a few light bulbs on the Christmas tree and there's no cure for it. It likely won't make any difference to his non-eligibility to run for the U.S. presidency but I think it's probably better for Canada if Cruz denounces his Canadian citizenship.
Zoisite: His mother was a U.S. Citizen when he was born so he could have been born in Namibia or Mongolia for what it's worth. The child of a U.S. citizen is a U.S. citizen and a natural-born one at that, and is eligible to be the U.S. President. Citizenship as a birthright due to heredity is called jus sanguinis. Citizenship as a birthright due to location of birth is called jus soli. He is Canadian due to jus soli, and American due to jus sanguinis. Simple as that.
Anyone who jumps to conclusions without understanding how birthright citizenship works in the U.S. is the one missing a few light bulbs on their tree.
Jambo101, As for his father being an "illegal alien," you have no idea of what his immigration status was and he was probably granted refugee or asylee status when he fled Cuba. There's even something called the Cuban Adjustment Act and NACARA which grant Cubans the right to stay in the U.S.
