Interesting.......I've been to Toronto several times and no one ever had the gall to say a thing to my face when I said I was from Pittsburgh.
But Brad; did you have the gall to postulate publicly that Canada has received and benefited greatly from American protection? Did you mention even once you felt insecure because you were not "allowed" to protect yourself? My personal favourite tossed at me by a Louisianan motorcycling buddy: "how did Canada go from a frontier to being a socialist nanny state in less than one hundred years?"
If you had not come forth with any of the more popularly held opinions by Americans, as expressed very publicly by your more corrupt political figures who get backhanders from corporations for perpetuating some of them, I would think you'd receive nothing but politeness and welcome.
It wasn't a lack of "gall". It was just due consideration for your personal projection.

Um, no because none of that's true......Just like a lot of the stereotypes some up north have for us.........And no, those are not popularly held opinions of Canadians by Americans. I have never heard anyone here say anything of the sort you have mentioned about Canada where I live. Canada is the most positively viewed country in the US. Any American who thinks any of the above is true is as much of an idiot as anyone who thinks every American is walking around with a gun strapped to their shoulder. I did find the term gall appropriate after some of the comments I read on Canadian news websites that involve the US. Some people love to run their mouth on a comment's section behind the safety of a computer at home, but won't dare to say what they do there to someone's face.

Comment's section? Really Brad try not to get too caught up in the comment's section.. I highly doubt these opinions are a good cross section of any group. As for your trip to Toronto, I suspect people were friendly to you when you say you are from Pittsburgh because you are a visitor and like most places, people appreciate that you have come to visit us and would like you to feel welcome. Its really as simple as that. What political views people have running through their heads is just that, political views and as with anywhere else, those views will be quite diverse across the board.

Have it your way Brad.
Some Canadian news websites portray America/ns in a negative light thereby eliciting "run-your-mouth" responses in the comments section of those sites is purely a Canadian characteristic worthy of the descriptor "gall" .
Okie dokie there Brad. We're all a bunch of hosers while Americans are completely guileless, having and expressing nothing but the highest regard for Canada and Canadians at every opportunity, all wanting nothing more than to sing Kambaya with Canada with nary a hint of "gall',...... ever.
I stand corrected Brad and will never again attempt to refute your obviously more informed factual analysis.

I never said any of that about Canadians........ There is a difference though in all surveys when comes to how Canada see the US and visa versa. I would hardly consider a couple right wing kooks to be the majority.

Well. I have never met a rude American IRL. Here or there. Only on the Internet.
Same here.. I've worked with, visited and interacted with way too many Americans to come to simplistic conclusions. I'd never resort to reading comments sections anywhere to garner my opinion about how I think they feel about Canadians. To me, its far more important to anchor my views/opinions based on real life interaction and the vast majority of Americans I've met are stellar people.
American, here. I've never met a rude Canadian... even the tourists from Quebec who'd vacation in Sedona, Arizona while I was there visiting seemed very nice, too.
In a nutshell, today it means a deadbeat loser and boozer. A goof.
The term hoser actually dates back to the early 30's depression years when thieves and con artists would make a living from siphoning rationed gas from farmers' trucks, tractors and other farm vehicles and then sell the gas on the black market or exchange it for moonshine. The gas thieves were called hosers.
The US has its stories of the Wild West, like Billy the Kid and the OK Corral, and the War of Independence is very much central to the national narrative.
Australia has it bushrangers, like Ned Kelly or Captain Moonlight, and tales of epic escapes by convicts, while the location of the Eureka Rebellion is a national monument where the rebel flag flies to this day.
And Canada?
