I'm going to go way out on a limb here and make a prediction. I predict that the end of the current Senate scandal will be the resignation of Stephen Harper as Prime Minister of Canada. He is truly caught between a rock and a hard place on this as his story continues to unravel day by day.
It's just amazing how such a nonissue really can balloon into a major political crisis when the main actors refuse to tell the truth about it. Harper and company have been their own worst enemies throughout the entire controversy. I'm thinking that Duffy must have had some pretty damning info on the government or why, why, why would they not just let him hang out to day right off the bat.
I can't wait to see old Steve resign in disgrace. He is so anti Canadian, he has zero respect for Canadian traditions, no respect for Parliament and is just the most insufferably conceited leader we have ever seen.
His entire party and their methods are no better than the Tea Party idiots in the GOP and in fact they are pretty much their twins in all respects.
So, what do you think? Will this be Steve's swan song or what?
It's possible that we'll see a Harper resignation. On the other hand, I'm not convinced he'll step down until something is pinned directly on him, whether that's criminal or not. If I were to make a prediction, it would be this: If the Prime Minister's story unravels quickly over the next couple of weeks, I think we'll see a resignation. If he's able to stall for some time, I think he'll hold on and serve out the remainder of his term.
He reminds me a of Jean Chretien, in some respects. Both were/are extraordinarly nimble politicians. I think that ability to politically outmanouver the opposition went to both their heads, eventually, and they became unconcerned with managing scandals - at a certain point, they became so enamoured with their own political abilities that they genuinely didn't think any scandal would stick to them.
It's the same story we get with every government, really. They've formed the government for quite a long time and I can think of very few examples where that's been the case and a government hasn't slid into corruption and entitlement.
What will be interesting, too, is what kind of government he'll run going forward. I think it's pretty clear that resignation or no, he won't win another term as Prime Minister. Knowing that, what kind of legacy legislation are we going to see, if any?
It's the Canadian way. Trudeau, Mulroney, Chretien, Harper, Harris, McGuinty...
Keep a party in power for ~8 years until the rot inevitably sets in, then start over with a clean slate. Rinse. Repeat.
It's not party specific.
While I don't disagree with you on the controversy, I have to raise a bit of an issue with the whole "anti-Canadian and conceited part." As far as the tea party goes, I live in the tea party heartland. There is ZERO in common between those people and any Canadian politician.
What Canadian traditions has he damaged? Did he consolidate and strip away the history of the Canadian Navy or the RCAF by rolling them up as Canadian Forces, like Trudeau? Did he change the name of the national holiday from Dominion Day to Canada Day like Trudeau did? Did he ride across the country in a train and flip the bird to an entire region like some other Prime Minister did? Notice a trend here? I think you have your anti-Canadian, conceited Prime Ministers confused.

Even PET at his worst was never found "In contempt" of parliament. He leads a party that practises, voter suppression and all kinds of dirty tricks during elections. That is the ultimate disrespect for the citizens of this country. He has gutted our reputation in the world, disregarded almost all environmental restraints, and seriously undermined Canadian sovereignty by his brown nosing of the Americans and support for Yankee Imperialism. He touts his government's economic record while running the largest deficit in Canadian history. All economic gains that have been made are for the 1% only as they are really Harper's only true constituency. All politicians are liars but Harper is not even good at that. His lies are so lame and so transparent it just boggles the mind to think he believes anyone buys this crap.
didn't read much comment here, but I will vote for Harper 100% next election.
Harper lives in reality. Many other politic parties live in fairyland.
I would like to see more privatization, declining union power and reduced pension/OAS.
You won't be voting for him because there is not a chance that he will be running again. You can already see a major fracture in the party with the top dogs jockeying for leadership in the post Harper CPC.

That sounds like Tea Party rhetoric..If i wanted more of that i'd just move back to the USA.
If i'm going to live in a supposed "socialist" country i want big government, much in the way of social programs, healthcare is fine as is and a raise in my pension would be nice.
Sure hope you don't mean healthcare
Do you think you could raise a family on minimum wage?
Does that include gov pensions as well?
healthcare should be reformed but not privatized. There are too many costly loopholes. For example, did you know that many people go to those massage salons, pay $20 for get a $100 invoice and get reimbursed from the government?
less union doesn't mean minimum wage. Stop being so dramatic about all the big evil corporations. Without them, most of us don't even have a job. And if minimum wage is what the market offers, sorry, that means your skills are worth only that much.
Yes, especially government pension.
