The city is pretty spread out and traffic is bad. I think winnipeg could use a light rail transit system or a tram. I'm curious how big Edmonton was when they got their LRT system?

They need to build a climate-controlled dome over the peg before anything else.

Edmonton first began construction on the LRT system in 1974, when the population was something like 450,000. I believe it was completed just prior to their hosting the Commonwealth Games in 1978.

I would guess the Commonwealth Games were the key to getting the funding for it.

Sorry, I mis-read the very last part. For some reason, I thought it said "I'm curious how big Edmonton was when they lost their LRT system?"

I think Winnipeg could really use a LRT system. For a city this size it has pretty bad traffic and the buses can get packed and move slow, Even really early in the morning.

LOL yeah, winters are pretty intense here. In the winter, taking the bus early in the Morning is terrible, specially if you have to transfer to another bus downtown. They have heated bus shelters, but early in the morning they are full of homeless people sleeping. The shelters reek of beer, urine and lysol. I had to take the bus last year for a days and i couldn use the shelters, had to wait outside in the -30 weather.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't LRT mean Little Reindeer Trains?

Winnipeg is building lower cost of bus based rapid transitways alternative to rail based one.
Another reason, is still pretty much accessible city with 20 mins of driving wherever you want to go and it is not forecasted to grow leaps and bounds.
