We had a woman come to New Zealand from Ohio for replacement hip surgery,
price in Ohio was going to be US $93000, her all up cost was US $23000 in NZ including airfares for her and her mother which also had a fortnights holiday built in.
I was surprised to hear from an American that he had to pay for blood during an operation in the USA, now that I find surprising.
You have to give them full marks for record keeping as virtually every aspirin will be shown on the final bill and I guarantee it will not be the same price you pay over the counter at Walgreen's.

It's free. But remember in life, you get what you pay for.

If thats your logic i guess you are paying high medical insurance rates down in the USA for less than mediocre service, or for many paying monthly premiums on health insurance that may not be there when you need it, (Junk insurance).
Don't get the new one until you literally have to. I was told over and over I needed to update and they just stopped asking. That was years ago. My brother had to go renew his photo healthcard last week.

Sucker.
It's always easier to quote the post you are responding to, unless it's obvious (here, it isn't). What are you talking about?
Way back it was mentioned that Canada's Health Cards were originally just a card with a number on it. Ontario for one had a fraud problem with anyone able to show an Ontario address being able to apply for those cards so a large number of cottage and other property owners of foreign citizenship were able to simply schedule their medical examinations or procedures to when they were visiting Canada. This was predominantly an 'Americans owning property in Canada' problem with them dinging our Ontario health plan to the tune of some 60,000 claims in fraudulent costs in one six month period alone back in the mid 90's.
Hence the creation of a photo identity health card with more in-depth information required to acquire it but it comes with an expiry date so must be renewed with that subsequent information required again while the old numbered card is good for life or until it crumbles from age.
You just have to know there will be a fee attached for the renewal of this card
