I don't know, I think people from Ontario have strong accents. Then again it's also regional.

Take these two for example.

I watched Degrassi and you definitely do say something that sounds alot like 'aboot' even if you don't think you do. Although most of the accents on Degrassi (the old one) sounded pretty American I could tell in some cases.

I think it just comes down to personal taste

Being an Aussie I get compliments, but I do know others who hate this Accent
For me personally I have always loved the Canadian accent though it is very rare in this part of the world
The South African accent is the one I can not stand, but again I know others who love it
Just trying to stimulate some discussion.

Same.
Some Australian words to me sound deliberately using other vowels, even they don't sound that way to you.
(but I usually know which word they mean )

Ex: "Ter-reef-ic" (terrific )

Our dipthong of "about",
the way I say it,
the "oo" sound probably gets slightly more stress than the "uh" or "eh" sound that preceeds it. (60/40?)
I learned to say the "ou" by deliberately always using the dipthong,
and the "oh" sound like "aboat" was just a lazier or casual way to say it.
("aboat" unfamiliar to me; I don't think I ever said it deliberately )

Here's an excellent example of a proper Canadian English accent,
for someone who's not paying attention to accent, just eloquence.
(though speech patterns are nearly informal at times )

Honestly, this must be the best example of a clear, natural English Canadian accent imho. Check it out.

We don't sound at all like people in California...trust me. Peraps Northern Minesota, Idaho, Northen Washington State, Montana if you need a close comparison.

But surely there is a difference in discussing the various accents of native English speakers versus the accents for those for whom English is not a first language.

It especially grinds my gears when "eh" is added. I can understand saying something like, "so you don't like the accent, eh?". But I loathe hearing things like, "Take care, eh". It just doesn't sound right!
Eh is just our version of Americas "Say Hunh"?
