Proper preparation? (income, income tax, how to)

I never in my life did tax preparations of my own, but now on I have to do it. So I started researching over the net and found articles like: 4 Things You Should Do Before You Prepare Your Taxes
Now, I know I need to know more over this that's why I thought of asking it on this forum. I would appreciate if anyone who did the tax preparations for them tell me the procedures one should follow and how to be ready for the preparation?
