I can't find that 'ever-increasingly dangerous world' comment to quote properly but, the second half of the last century up to now has been far less violent than the first. I don't really see why people keep saying things get worse, comparatively.
People think everything's getting worse: crime, war, poverty... it's ridiculous. They don't care about the facts because they enjoy living in fear. It's like a drug to them.
It pains me to see Americans start threads like this and express support for such atrocious imperialism. Your country was the one who fought against it so viciously in the 1770s and 80s, yet now you'd support the idea of inflicting it upon a foreign country in the 2010s?
First, let's all agree and recognize that it is extremely unlikely that the annexation of Canada would ever happen. It is a weird right-wing nut-job, wet dream fantasy like Red Dawn.
Second, for the sake of argument, IF the United States annexed Canada under the scenario that the OP posted, Canadians would be fools to fight it because the truth is you are more like us than you are like the Brits, the Aussies, the Kiwis, or anyone else.
You're already Americans (North Americans), by definition and practicality:
1. With the exception of the Quebecois, you're overwhelmingly English speakers, just like us.
2. Historically, you were a British colony, just like us.
3. We have very similar (if not exact) laws and customs.
4. Until recently, we freely traveled across the border into each other's country without the need of a passport (I know it won't but I would like to see that return).
5. We are economically tied to each other through trade and commerce.
6. Like it or not, Canada is protected militarily by the watchful eye of NORAD and the resources of the United States Department of Defense. We all know the truth is Canada Defense Forces, by themselves, are not big enough or strong enough to keep the Russian bear or the Chinese dragon off your ass(ets). In an ever dangerous and violent world, a strong and reliable ally is a necessity.
7. It is not in either country's best interest to see the other stumble and fall. Like it or not, our futures are intrinsically tied together. We are stronger and more prosperous with each other. United we stand, divided we fall.
So let's stop all of this foolish right-wing porn talk concerning a twisted fantasy of war with our Canadian neighbors and friends.
Trying to argue that we're more like Americans than the Kiwis or Australians by arguing that we're part of the British empire like the Americans *once* were and that we're predominantly English speaking doesn't help much either.
I am not saying Canadians are weak and they love the United States. I know you guys are proud of your country. All i am asking is would you risk your life for your country? Or would you join a country is verys similar to your and still retain your lifestyle more or less, for the sake of your life.

Yes, I would absolutely risk my life for my country, rather than be assimilated.

I agree that this thread is ridiculous but no, we're not protected militarily by the US under the scenario outlined by the OP - we are then protected immediately by the entire rest of the world and it is the US who is isolated. It would be such an extremely stupid act that you would be at de facto war with the entire world.
If you choose to bomb the world to smithereens, you still lose.
And it doesn't matter at all, what we have in common. In the OP's scenario, the Canadian army doesn't even matter much, because Canadians would be terrorists in your country until the day they got back their own and you would never see us coming because we would look just like your neighbours.
And it doesn't matter if we were out-armed, any more than it mattered that you had the better equipment in Vietnam and other places. It would be guerrilla warfare. There is no army that that bizarre scenario who has to surrender.

HELL, no.
Let's say Russia decided to annex your country against your government's will but allowed you to retain your lifestyle, would you risk your life for yours?
people actually think Canada has a chance to "fight" in case of an American invasion, LOL. Canada will be annexed within 48 hours if it really happens.
People keep using the 1812 war as evidence that Canada somehow can defend itself. Really? In 1812, the US was still a weak country, smaller than most European countries; and Canada won the war because the much powerful British fought. It was never a Canada vs. US war. It is a UK-US war which happened on the land of today's Canada. To expect getting anywhere closer to Washing DC with some imaginary torch is simply day dreamining.
Even Japan can take Canada if it wants, not to mention the US.
Botticelli, botticelli. Tsk. Tsk. No one has brought up the War of 1812. And secondly, I guess the Vietnamese didn't have a chance? Afghanistan? Guerilla wars are the worst wars to fight. Or is the War on Terror over and I didn't notice it happening?
