Workers' rights in America are terrible and the social safety net, while large, is IMO still inadequate. How does Canada compare?

Not Canadian but I can tell you it has to... without a doubt. I know they have maternity leave which the USA doesn't.

The social safety net in the USA is considered pitiful compared to other first world nations. But we are also an enormous country with too many people and tax monies are used differently.

Here's the Federal guidelines to workers rights in Canada.

Just to add as well that labour union density is greater in Canada vs the U.S by a ratio 11.4 to 27.5 percent.. I'm part of one of those and the Collective agreement I am a part of really adds a whole new dimension to workers rights, protection and perks if you will.. One example is that if one is fired the union can file a grievance that will go to arbitration and after hearing the case, an arbitrator will decide the employee's fate.. This process is much more streamlined than a legal process and normally much more forgiving to an employee based on a variety of factors, length of service for example is taken into account. Of course, the Collective agreement also has many other favourable perks that govern Vacation time, Shift premiums, Extended health care benefits (I have unlimited accupuncture, massage, chiropractic etc) shift trades, sick days, Family leave days, short/long term disability benefits that go well beyond any Federal or Provincial Labour laws.

Just to add maternity and parternity leave - so papa can take time off as well.. The mother and father can also split those between one another so say mom can take the first 9 months off and than go back to work and dad can assume the remaining 3 months and go off or either can take the full 12.
