Football played with helmets, shoulder pads, touchdowns, field goals, etc. As played in the NFL and CFL.
I use the word gridiron because "American football" is not an accurate term to describe the entire sport, since there is another variety (the Canadian one) that is also very widespread.
Note also that the Canadian version is actually the *original* North American gridiron football code, and that visiting Canadians are the ones who brought the game to Americans, who over the years changed the rules slightly and made American football the game it is today.
kind of a blanket term used to describe football played in the United States and Canada (ie... NFL, CFL, and college level). Were guys wear lots of pads, and make running and throwing plays with lots of stoppage.
gridiron football:
is not rugby
is not soccer(football)
is not Aussie rules football
is not hurling
is not handball
it's gridiron football. Gridiron refers I think in true terms to the shape of the field and it's dimensions which signals that is for NFL or CFL style play. CFL football fields are bigger than NFL fields but they are called gridirons and they both have hash marks on them.
That is not at all true, Yes in the CCAA (Canada) they use Canadian rules, but in the NCAA (USA), they use American Football rules, but in the NCAA its one foot in-bounds, in in the NFL its two feet in-bounds, before falling out of bounds in both NCAA, and NFL. All American Rules in NCAA and NFL.
On the contrary, I would say that in the vast majority of the country high school football teams play with Canadian rules.
CIS university footbal (Canadian college football) also plays Canadian rules.

The question was about which rules are used in Canada, not in the U.S. Of course in the U.S. they would use American rules.
No disrespect to the CFL, but no Professional Football Player would choose to play in the CFL over the NFL if they truly had a choice. Average Salary in the CFL is around $82,000/yr. Compare that to the MINIMUM salary in the NFL for Rookies which is $400,000/year. I dont see anyone making that decision.
Being a huge fan of "The U" I am a supporter of Jared Payton, but his point about Backs in the NFL being less versatile than the CFL does not hold any water. Name an elite RB in the NFL that cannot Block, Run and Catch at an elite level. The best backs are out there 1st through 3rd down.
They are 2 absolutely different games with different skillsets required of players. Success in one league does not guarantee success in the other.
An NFL field is 100 yards long and 50 yards wide with 10 yard endzones while a CFL field is considerably larger with a 110 x 65 yard playing area and 20 yard endzones. That's an additional 33,750 sq ft of space for players to run around on.
NFL offences are restricted to having a single man in motion before the snap while CFL offences can have all eligible receivers moving toward the line of scrimmage before the snap of the ball.
NFL has 4 downs to make 10 yards; the CFL gives a team 3 downs.
NFL allows punt returners the option of calling a fair catch; the CFL only mandates a 5 yard restraining zone around the punt receiver until the ball is caught.
There have been plenty of players who have been successful in one league only to flounder in the other.
Yeah the guys who didn't make it in the NFL, or just sucked in it after just one year had more success in the CFL, CFL is the reject League dip****.

Oh sorry, I thought I read something off in your post, please excuse me.
