The Frank Slide occurred in 1903 in the mining town of Frank, Northwest Territories, Canada. The mountain top just exploded and 90 million tons of rock buried the edge of the town killing around 80-90 people in 100 seconds. The people remain buried under the rocks till this day.

I heard about this for the first time on a TV news program yesterday. Mind blowing!

Except it's in Southern Alberta. Gateway of the Crowsnest Pass. Yes, I know it was technically the NWT until 1905.

The debris field still looks cool on Google Maps.

This same thing has happened a few times in BC. One such place (also on hwy 3) is Hope Slide. There is concern that some day we could see a massive slide in the Fraser Canyon that would block the might Fraser River.

Maybe I should have said NWT (now Alberta) ...

Like I said, it's just me being pedantic. If you say NWT, immediately everyone's mind goes to north of 60. Frank is at about 49.5 and in Alberta.

You're not wrong, just me being anal.

I hiked/scrambled up turtle mountain last spring. Interesting perspective.
