I met a Minnesotan once at a gay New Year's Eve house party.

He was pretty cool. I liked how he said "sota/soda."

Other than that, they don't really cross my mind. They're pretty far from Ontario.

I missed this comment earlier, yes I agree 100%.

Well, it's far from Toronto, which is really what you meant anyway

Canada is in general a very cosmopolitan, secular, open-minded country.

Minnesota is an insular Midwestern state with a fair bit of fundamentalist religiosity and racism lying barely below the surface (once you get out of MSP). It produced Michelle Bachmann, for god's sake.

Socially and culturally, the two places are extremely different.

I think in general, Canada is far more accepting of human diversity (racial, religious, sexual - even just people being eccentric and odd) than just about anywhere in the US. And even more so than the Midwest, which is conformist and generally passively hostile to outsiders.
Michelle Bachmann is one congressional district...and she's an embarrassment to us all. Keep in mind, the MSP metro area is over 3 million people. That's about half the state. You only have to look at the GOP primary results to see where we stand politically. We were the only state that Marco Rubio won (the most moderate of the main candidates at that time). Also, the last time we voted for a Republican candidate for president was in 1972. We are the most reliably liberal state in the country, as a whole. Also, we are VERY accepting of human diversity! We embrace it here! I have never experienced racism here or any hostility toward people that are different...and I try to be keenly aware of these things.

I guess Canadians don't know that much about us...and, why should they? They've got a great thing going up there that we strive for here in Minnesota. Maybe come visit our great Twin Cities and see for yourself!

Yes, MSP is a close political comparable to what can be found in anglo-Canadian cities, but other states with similar politics may be less reliably liberal due to rural areas. Boston, NYC are similarly reliable for progressives, just that rural areas in their respective states are a lot more fickle as far as liberalism is concerned.

But let's not forget that, while on social issues MN (and also a handful of Northeast states, like Maine or Vermont, although comparing even Maine or Vermont with Quebec can prove to be apples to oranges) is close enough to their neighboring Canadian regions, on economic issues it's actually quite different.

LOL Yeah I know what she meant, I was just giving her a hard time. That part of Ontario is pretty empty.
