Potholes are everywhere where there is cold and snowy winters and in need of use of salt. Canada's potholes are no worse than Northern US cities trust me.
The 401 stretch from Lancaster to Cornwall is better than the 20 from Lancaster to Montreal; perhaps not a whole lot better but still...
So do Montreal really do have it any worse than Detroit or Chicago? All three cities have been, at some point, dubbed the World Capital of Potholes...
Although I understand that potholes (and everything transportation-related) are a politically sensitive topic in several cities, or provinces even, I often hear that some Canadian cities are horrible with respect to potholes.
Edmonton
Montreal
Winnipeg
As a Montreal-area native, I often hear about potholes being significantly worse in Montreal than in Ottawa, Plattsburgh or Burlington (and Minneapolis, too, since I am attending Minnesota for my PhD and will get a Minnesota driving license, if only because it makes rental of moving trucks that much easier and/or cheaper).
But is that actually the case?
Who actually have it worse for potholes?
When I was in Montreal in March 2005, the streets looked like a moonscape and the sidewalks were badly pocked and dangerous.
Minneapolis (the whole Twin Cities area actually) just recently upgraded a good chunk of its freeway system in the last 10 years so its not a fair comparison. while most of the freeways are beautiful some of the surface streets are horrible right after winter (April/May)... but things are usually good by summer.
Fargo, North Dakota also has very nice freeways for a city its size.
Manitoba doesn't really have American style freeways but that doesn't mean their highways are bad, the main highway going from the US border to Winnipeg seems like a nice smooth road but it still has many intersections and it goes into small towns.
They've done a lot of upgrading as I recall in the last few years on highway 75. But a lot of the roads elsewhere in the province are pretty awful. I don't think I've ever personally seen anything like what Magnatomicflux posted but it wouldn't surprise me if it existed here too.

then how are German and Swedish roads in great condition? The truth is US and Canada don't spend much on maintaining infrastructure.
I am from Montreal and drive often to Burlington and Plattsburgh. Vermont for sure has way better roads than the province of Quebec. Plattsburgh and Upstate New York I find them a little bit less maintained but still much better than Quebec.
Ontario is doing a better job at maintaining the roads than Quebec. Even New Brunswick and Nova Scotia roads are better, at least the highways.
