Not really, I've never encountered any Americans who I feel don't know things that they should, and I'm sure if I met any of these people they would have wildly inaccurate mental images of Maine or California anyway :P
Some Canadians are irked by Americans in general having low knowledge of Canada, but frankly I'm not one of them, I'm more annoyed by how little Europeans seem to know about Canada, in particular the British who have every reason in the world to know something about Canada. By contrast, the average American's knowledge of the country is often higher.

It depends on where in the US they live. Someone living in Seattle all their life and never having been to Vancouver just seems odd to me.
I had a friend from Spokane, who had never been to Canada and knew NOTHING about us. His first trip to Vancouver was an eye opener.
The first words out of his mouth when I opened my door were " It's a city!? "
He admitted he wasn't sure what he was expecting, but it wasn't what he got.
I find people in the UK, a certain generation that is, are ignorant about Canada. The older generation seem to have at least some sort of idea.
If it is any consolation, many (if not most) Americans know little about their own country outside the locality in which they live.
Americans are generally not a very curious people when it comes things that are outside the bounds of reality in which they live.
I did find that when I was in NYC. This was a while go though. They new nothing then of Seattle, not even where it was. This was before " grunge " and the year before " Frasier " went on the air. ( However anyone getting their only information about Seattle from Frasier, will still be sorely lacking in knowing anything really about Seattle )

I enjoy telling outrageous lies that feed into others stereotypes about Canada. I usually start small, then continue to embellish till someone calls BS.
Unfortunately for me, many Americans know a great deal about Canada and won't fall for even the mildest yarn.

Hahahaha like Rick Mercer when he went down to the USA and convinced people to sign a petition for Canada to stop leaving their senior citizens to die on the Arctic ice floes???
