Well said Botti!! I wish I could rep you a few times with your posts in here! Don't think most Canadians hold these narrow- minded and selfish views even though sometimes they come off the loudest, they aren't representative of all of us. The Canada I know has a heart!
You're just as much a Canadian btw as anyone else! Same goes for my muslim friends both colleagues and personal friends whom I know many.
I am fully aware of that, but the selfish ones ARE loud.
I have been spending the past 3 or 4 days arguing with my immigrant friends that these refugee pose minimal threat, and that they should stop acting like they are so superior and look down upon regular Muslims just because some terrorists did something horrible - aren't these people running from such atrocity as well?
Canada's gesture of accepting 2.5 times refugees our southern neighbour does makes me proud.
As someone who didn't die in London 2007 bombings through pure miracle I find your comment rather disrespectful. Over 100 people died this month in Paris because of fake refugees. Threat is real but when you live sheltered life in Canada it's easy to forget that Europe had no islamic terrorism issues pre 1970s at all.
I remember that old saying 'Women and Children first'. I'm glad Canada got this right. Most of the crimes in the world are committed by men. We don't need the headache.
How does Canada benefit from bringing in these people?
Let's weigh the pros and cons. Cons are potential terrorist attacks, they will be recepients of government aid not givers, modernrebel is right that they will not assimilate and may have resentment.
Pros?
It is the right thing to do. Morals trump fear in my world.

Well the squeaky wheel gets the oil or thinks It will... Most wheels in Canada just quietly go about doing the job.. I think most of us are tolerant and open minded but yes we have to acknowledge the fact that there are those who simply would be happier shuttering our doors... They will look for everything and anything to fear - this is how life is to them.
Anyway, I agree the vast majority of these refugees are trying to flee from deplorable condition and the very thing some are accusing them of being. I find that ironic.
What is your expectation in terms of assimilation? Assimilation to what exactly? Should they shed all aspects of their cultural and linguistic identity? As for values and laws, well we have those so I do think anyone who comes to Canada is expected to assimilate in certain ways and adhere to requirements such as in the Charter and requirements in our laws but yes - laws do evolve and thank goodness for that! What do you want from them exactly?
I think the vast majority of immigrants/refugees who come to Canada end up speaking one of either French or English and end up becoming contributing members of our society... What is the problem?
there are other issues, canada is a country that values gender equality and supports gay marriage. how are you gonna deal with people who come here and want to teach their children that women are second class citizens and being gay is wrong and should be illegal, all because its part of their religious and cultural believes.

i bet your world is beautiful, im sure everybody holds hands and sing kumbaya, in the meantime everything is closed in belgium due to high terrorism alert and over 100 people died in france this month because of shootings, several months after 12 guys were shot because they drew a cartoon.

Everybody who is a newcomer to Canada soon learns what Canadian values are and what will be expected of them regardless of their religious and cultural beliefs.
These refugees will be getting an en masse crash course in Canadian values.
We will deal with them by educating them and teaching them Canadian values and laws and make sure they understand what their rights and freedoms are, and also understand that they can't impose their contrary values if they expect to stay here. No newcomers, not even refugees, are exempt from deportation or prison if they cause trouble and go against Canada's laws and values.
They're displaced, homeless and frightened and just want a place where they can be at peace and feel safe. Under the circumstances I don't think they're going to be causing trouble, I think they'll be making their best efforts to try to assimilate to Canada.
