Dont know how many times this has been discussed? I have never been to Canada, but spent 4 years living in the UK.Australia is certainly not a carbon copy of the UK that is for sure.

Climate has a big impact on culture though. You get different styles of housing, different fruit and vegetables, different sports and pass times (the UK has very little of the beach culture which is so common in Australia) different clothing, lots of outdoor cafes and cinemas etc etc which are all designed to suit the different climate.

The only part of Canada that has a similar climate to the UK is its west coast. Canada has more climate in common with the US as both have interior mountain ranges, plains and temperate forest in the east. Both experience polar frigid air masses like no place in the UK does.

Having said all this, I'm not sure of either country is any closer in culture to the UK than the other.

Canada has beach culture, at we do in Southern Ontario (Wasaga beach). So does B.C and the east coast.

There are actually a lot of points where its interesting to compare and contrast Australia and Canada; two countries that are in some ways so similar, but in others very different. Not sure why you'd want to muddy the water by throwing in the distractor of the very faded UK influence from years long gone.

A few points:

The place and issues of the indigenous peoples of both countries seems eerily similar...

Lifestyles are very similar, just switch the impact of climate between 'hot' and 'cold' respectively....

Unlike Canadians, Aussies seem determined to control their government, rather than being governed...

The 19th century Asian influence touched all of Australia, but seems a primarily west coast thing in Canada.....

Why do so many Canadians and rural Australians finish their sentences with 'eh'.....

They're both current day melting pot cultures, but may be heading in different directions.....

Why do Aussies find Canadian politeness, "nice" but a little scary...

Canada has very limited similarities with the UK and especially culturally and socially. In terms of it's values and social inclinations Canada is more attuned to Europe/Scandinavia.

Australia has far more connections to the UK than Canada and for that matter so does the US. Americans are far more fascinated with the UK monarchy, culture, and media than Canadians are who tend to view it with indifference.

As far as the UK viewing Aus/Canada.......all three enjoy a close relationship and would come to each other's defence in a heartbeat but Australians & British view each other as members of the family while Canadians and the British each view each other as good friends.

If you look at issues like trade, government relations, the movement of people on vacation and business travel, Canada is actually more connected to the UK and Europe, than is Australia. Most people don't realize how focussed on the Asia-Pacific Australia is until they get here. I suspect it goes back to WWII; the bombing of northern Australian cities and town, Japanese submarines sunk in Sydney Harbour, the battles of the Coral Sea and Bismarck Sea. Australia "got real", real quick about its place in the world and the relationships it needed to nurture and foster. It's one of those points where Canada and Australia are actually quite different; the impact of a near death experience on the national psyche. And decades later, the steady flow of boat people escaping the aftermath of conflicts in South East Asia.

It does make me laugh when people say there is no 'beach culture' in the UK - its an island!

Coast Facts:
The UK'scoastline is long in comparison to the UK's area and to the coasts of someother, similar sized countries; - the length of the UK coastline is around12,500kms or 7,760 miles*. We estimate (piece of string!) that it is about 5000 miles around the coast of mainland Britain - excluding all islands.

Around 60% of our coastline is located in Scotland and the off-shore islands.

Our coast is around one and a half times longer than the coast of Italy - 7,600km.

It ismore than three and a half times longer than the coastline of Spain - 4,964 km.

It ismore than five times longer than the coastline of France - 3427 km.

Everyone in the UK is a couple of hours drive (at most, most people nearer than that) from the beach! The beach (seaside resorts) play a massive part in the lives of British people! Personally I have been surfing the North Cornish / Devon coasts since 1991, now there may only be 4 months of the year that you can actually sunbathe on a British beach but to suggest there is no beach culture is daft.
