Not saying you will have a problem but just a heads up on the direction of questioning at customs.
I'm planning to be in Canada for a month. Anyone familiar with the cost of hockey equipment would understand why I don't want to purchase new gear only to be able to use it a month.

I play amateur hockey in the US. My friends cousin said I could play on his team in B.C while I'm there. Think CBSA will be o.k. with that?

Yup, the gear is used and carries that disgusting hockey smell. They'll be no doubt I'm bringing it into the country for personal use

Hard to say what the demeanor of any given CBSA agent might be on any given day,
What they will be hunting for is the possibility of you coming to Canada and staying and or working,They will want to know where you will be staying and how you will support yourself,They'll probably also ask if you've ever been arrested.
May be nothing but be prepared to answer these questions.
Have a good trip.

I have an airbnp booked and enough savings to easily cover expenses for a month. I've never been arrested. My main reason for visiting is to spend time with a girl I met on an online dating site. However, I've been advised to say I'm just visiting a friend as I'll be exposed to harsher scrutiny if I tell CBSA I'm visiting a GF.

Thank you! It's my first time out of the US and B.C looks beautiful

Have a great stay in Canada and if the CBSA gets a bit grumpy dont let it spoil your trip as we have to go through the same crap when we go to the USA. eg=
