I agree, Stratford can be cool if your into live theatre.

Closer to Michigan:

I agree Grand Bend is nice... Nearby Grand Bend is another provinical park called "The Pinery," which is also along Lake Huron.
Near the town of Port Franks, there are also some huge sand dunes, almost as nice as the ones near Sandbanks Provincial Park.

Never been to Point Pelee, but I have been to Sandusky Ohio, probably similar to Point Pelee (minus the extensive marshland about) 40 miles south on the other side of Lake Erie. Pretty place with all those islands.

Would it be cheaper for an American to fly into Detroit than take the bus to Windsor than get on the VIA Rail to Toronto?

I live in Chicago...

Would it be better to drive? I am looking for cheaper options than flying directly to Toronto

Driving is the cheapest way of getting from Chicago to Toronto. It's not that bad a drive.

VIA Rail fares are generally double those of Amtrak.
