I am surprised that BC has much higher crime rate than Ontario.
I'm not really surprised... there seem to be way more homicides (and violent crime in general) per capita in western Canada. Vancouver's metro area has as many homicides each year as Toronto's, but with a significantly smaller population.
I couldn't really guess why this is the case. Is law enforcement just less effective out west? Is the population skewing younger? That tends to push up crime rates in an area. Are the gangs just more violent? That might be a factor--there seem to be more drug gang-related murders around Vancouver at least.

Having a third of your downtown inhabited by sanctioned junkies doesn't help.

BC's crime mainly comes from areas like Prince George.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how CSI actually works. It doesn't say BC has a higher crime rate necessarily, but it could be the severity of the crimes in BC is higher, giving it a higher rating.
Just reading ( haven't finished yet ) Stats Can explanation on who they derive these figures already has me confused.
"To do this, each type of offence is assigned a seriousness "weight". 4 The weights are derived from actual sentences handed down by courts in all provinces and territories. 5 More serious crimes are assigned higher weights, less serious offences lower weights."
That bit makes me ask the question, is it possible that some provinces hand our heavier sentences than others for the same crime? That would skew the results right there.
I'll have to read the rest of it.
