The negatives of this for Trudeau are going to become more readily visible in the coming days as he unilaterally appointed her in spite of objections raised by opposition parties to there having been a bi-partisan ad-hoc committee used for her predecessor's selection. Another example of Trudeau's primary belief in himself over the process.

As you say, this will lend further credence to the musings of many about the continued need for a Royal Rep within Canada's governance. Another crack in the foundation, if you will.
He will survive, I agree he seemingly ignored red flags but will nevertheless move forwards un scathed. The pandemic really has been kind to him in some ways, overshadowing some of his poor decisions.

What are the ideal characteristics a Governor General should have?

For starters, one who works well with others is a plus.

When you look at the duties of a Governor General I would think grace, intelligence, and being able to convey and represent Canada in a non-partisan manner to the world when they travel or host dignitaries here at home.

This example isn't actually that crazy. They often are people who are quite beloved or at least highly respected by the citizenry. And they can be from all walks of life but usually they are public figures. So thinking in the context of the US to explain it to an American, think of people like John Glenn, Andy Rooney, Morgan Freeman, Neal Degrasse Tyson, Joe di Maggio, Ralph Nader, Toni Morrison, etc.

Bilingualism for the GG is virtually a non-negotiable as well.

The wife of the current PM would be a total non-starter.

And I know Suesbal has a thing for Karine Vanasse, but no.
