Man. I like Skytrax, they're pretty good, but I'm not sure about their criteria here. I've been to probably more than my fair share of these, and to have some of these, like Panama City or Domodedovo make the top 100 is tragic.
Ratings can be a bit tricky when asking passengers. It's not an exact science. Some blame the airport for Customs issues and Airlines making errors.
I've read a lot of negative reviews on airports because the customs agent was rude, or an airline didn't live up to it's service, when that has nothing to do with the airport itself.

Agreed. I don't disagree that the new expansion in YVR is nice, but there's some real ****holes that they have highly ranked.
Pretty good growth year for the big 3 Canadian airports - YYZ, YVR and YUL. 2016 pax numbers show each broke pax records.
I'm just waiting for Botti to come along and tell us that these aren't real airports, but tiny little sheds compared to what exists in Asai. LOL...except this time he just might be right. Some of the best looking airports are in Asia etc.

Exactly... Another BIG complaint is wait times for baggage and blaming it on the airport. In actual fact it is either airline employees or handling companies that are hired by the airline. If you are waiting long for them to offload, the majority of that wait is because the airline is taking a long time to offload your baggage from the aircraft - not physical issues with the facility. Same thing with Catsa security screening, these are Government employees and are not employed by the airport enforcing rules the airport did not create and has little to no control of.

Funding is probably a lot different in airports in Asia. Canadian airports don't get governmental funding at all and actually have to pay rent to the Feds. Canadian airports have to be more creative than most countries in order to generate funds to finance not just day to day ops of the airport, but also for growth and expansion into the future as well.
YYZ is the 32nd busiest airport in the world by total pax numbers and the 23rd for International pax numbers. That isn't too shabby - especially considering Toronto isn't the 32nd largest urban area in the world (50th) and (as do other Canadian airports) compete with American airports that are much larger connecting facilities than O/D pax traffic. Atlanta is the busiest, but it actually has less International pax than YYZ - most of the people aren't going to Atlanta or leaving - they are just connecting going somewhere else. As for facility size - Terminal 1 in Toronto is actually one of the largest terminals in the world believe it or not. The biggest problem with it is it is on the sterile and clinical side. Flexible, functional, but not a lot of character.

Easy fix. You just do what IAH did. People complained about the wait for luggage being too long? Make the walk from the gate further away.
