Saw a US guy trying to push a US one dollar bill into a city parking meter. I traded him a loonie for his paper bill. He was dumbstruck.
xxx.
That's plain idiocy . Was the guy wasted or did he not even ponder the reason he had to show a passport or passport card at customs in order to get to Windsor was that he was entering a foreign country? But then I'm sure some naive and provincial Americans think that US currency is accepted anywhere in the world including a parking meter in Windsor, Ontario .
I spent a couple of summers here in Toronto working as a tour guide on the double decker buses. Four round trips a day, about 200 passengers a day.
The most common questions fell into 3 categories.... Good places to eat, where to buy a specific thing...........and why do we have this "funny money " ?
I made it into a game, by asking questions back.........Why are US bills green , and who invented that special green ink ? A Canadian. How many countries does the Royal Canadian Mint print money for ? About 85. I also pointed out that I worked for tips, and the One and Two dollar coins are great for tipping your tour guide. At least a hundred a day.......
Most Canadian retailers accept US currency as a matter of course, but they don't have to.
In the US......just try to pay for anything, with Canadian currency . I had a Canadian dime thrown back at me by a clerk in a 7-11 in a Georgia, when I accidentally included it the hand full of coins that I used to pay for a bag of chips. Ignorant.
Just an anecdote....: Back when it was introduced, people were generally opposed to changing the currency from a bill for one dollar. They were kind of incensed over it. Some fringe sort of people really believed it was being imposed, kind of conspiracy-style, for whatever reason. I had a cousin working at a coffee shop in the Maritimes who told me she gave a customer a couple of new loonies in his change... and he was so angry, he threw the coins on the counter and told her to keep them! Here we are, 30 years later...and people are pretty proud of our Canadian "loonies". How times change.
