We also believe in system of basic healthcare available for all regardless of ability to pay; go figure?

Our "culture" must be very confusing for some Americans.

It strikes me as strange to say the least that a lot of these things being used as 'look over there' deflections were, until just recently, policy within the U.S. for eons.

Today's debate over DACA is just one example of compassion existant proving the lie to Canada being unique in 'seeming' to put it's culture up for sacrifice.

The Haitians are also being granted temporary work permits until their petitions can be heard. I think the reason for that is to reduce the demands on the public purse.

Isn't that a common practice for refugee claimants in Canada?

The CBC(?) article I read 2 or 3 weeks ago didn't say. I suspect it is. It makes sense if the courts are really backed up and it takes several months to get a hearing. My guess is that many petitioners would be eager to prove that they can be self-supporting if allowed to stay.

DACA should have never be implemented. It is a shame, a sordid example of political pandering and expediency and a slap int he face for the immigrants that waited in line and paid their dues to come to the US. Shame, shame, shame...

"No Irish need apply?"

"Are Catholics loyal to the Pope or their country?"

"None is too many?"

So spousal abuse is alright with you if it's done under cover of an exotic culture or religion?

About as okay with me as when it's done under the cover of being an unexotic atheist white man.

Seems to me a difference needs to be made between judging people who've done nothing and cracking down on objectionable behaviour when it happens.

There are certain things that are not acceptable in Canada regardless of how many other cultures condone them out there.

When you talk to *some* Canadians it almost seems like this is negotiable.

It should not be.
