What's the closest place to upstate NY to visit Canada? Any suggestions of areas to visit? We're pretty open to mountains or beach. We just want to visit something close that worth it.

Upstate NY is a big place. If you are near Plattsburgh I'd go to Montreal. If you are near Buffalo, go to Niagara Falls or Toronto. If you are near Watertown, go to Ottawa. Your options will be either Quebec or Ontario, but NY is a wide state and driving distances can be long.

You can rule out the mountain option....... definitely not happening in Ontario.

If it's beaches you want, from Buffalo I'd try the Crystal Beach area of lake Erie which is just west of Fort Erie. Coming across at Ivy Lea I'd head for Sandbanks Provincial Park in Prince Edward County which is abut 50 miles west of the Ivy Lea Bridge.

Niagara Falls and historic Niagara-On-The-Lake. About 1/2 hour from Buffalo NY.

In the summer there's the Shaw Festival in Niagara, where they perform a lot of plays, perhaps Shakesperean?
