I live in downtown Vancouver and have worked here in a public facing job so see film crews often and have met tons of the talent. I pretend not to know who they are when they come in to where I work since it's not relevant to them getting what they need from me and I don't want to make it weird. The English Canadian and the US film industries are practically a two headed dragon, more intertwined than any other country's film industries, so we don't distinguish too much whether the actor is American or Canadian. Our guys work and live down there, and their guys work and shoot up here, and even get involved in the community. For example, when a local movie theatre, the Rio, was under threat a couple weeks ago and people were signing petitions to save it, Elijah Wood and Kevin Smith got involved in this very local issue and lent there support, with Smith offering to show his movies there. Guys you think of as American will know all about how to get around town and where the local stores and services are - some have spent alot of time in this city.

This is very true.

I read that the first three “Superman” movies starring Christopher Reeve were partially filmed in Canada, so even then the country was a movie tax haven.

Offering tax incentives is only part of it. The exchange on the dollar plays a part as well.

It's also the infrastructure of movie lots and studios, plus all the crews that have experience in making films.

As for Superman, very little was filmed in Canada.

Any French Canadian movies filmed outside of Montreal?

You occasionally see some filmed in Quebec City, or parts of movies filmed in Quebec City. But it's overwhelmingly Montreal you see.

There is a big drop after that in terms of the visibility of the other cities like Sherbrooke, Gatineau, Trois-Rivières and Saguenay.

A number of movies are also set in random rural areas. No towns or villages in particular though the Laurentian mountains north of Montreal do show up a lot due to their scenery and proximity to the big city.

All of this is true of Quebec TV as well.

Is production consistent throughout the year or does it slack off in winter?

It's pretty busy here in Vancouver most of the year, but my guess is it's busier in the drier and warmer months.

Two years ago a friend from LA was here in Vancouver filming a major studios film. He told me that he had trouble getting some crew, because there were 57 productions filming in and around Vancouver.

I wonder if any major productions were filmed in the depth of a Canadian winter.
