It seems that any trade war with the US will severely impact the economic well-being of Ontarians! Hope Doug Ford help Ontarians get out of this mess!
Doug Ford, seriously?
55% of Ontario’s much larger goods imports are also from the US.. in the end that’s 198 billion in exports (over 30% of which is for the auto industry) and almost 193 billion in imports, so Ontario is not the only place that stands to lose from a trade war... and that’s before taking into account the collateral effect of pissed off Canadian travelers who will find someplace else to spend their money, which might seriously hurt the US’ services surplus will Canada (12 billion from travel alone).
Trump is upending the entire North American Free Trade Agreement for the benefit of a few boisterous border state inhabitants and to earn more points for himself. Believe me if he trashes the Canadian economy, he will also trash the U.S. economy too as a result. As I said in another thread, many of the folks clamoring for a trade war are the ones who don't visit Canada, who have no business with Canada, and who probably have enough but are greedy enough to want more.
It baffles me why Trump is choosing to wage multiple trade wars simultaneously less than 5 months before the midterms. Mexico, Canada and the EU are all targeting Trump voters with their retaliatory tariffs and may be joined soon by China (Trump is expected to announce tomorrow that the U.S. is going ahead with the Chinese tariffs).
It was announced today that NAFTA negotiations will start up again this summer but no dates have been set. The Mexican election is on July 1 but the new Mexican president doesn’t assume power until December 1. I don't know how that complicates negotiations.

Soooo looking forward to the announcements of specific tariffs imposed by the EU and Mexico on the USA! So many comments on this forum about the tariffs reveal a complete ignorance about what is about to hit them. They see this as a spat between Canada and the USA, and they believe that Canada is responsible for the problems created by the President of the USA.
According to Trump, "trade wars are fun". Let the fun begin!
Canadians are already actively and collectively focused on locally-grown and locally-sourced products, travel to the country down South is off the list.
"The new duties start applying in July," European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic told reporters. "It is a measured and proportionate response to the unilateral and illegal decision taken by the United States."
Sefcovic said that formalities in finalizing the list should be completed this month. The EU says it will introduce "rebalancing" tariffs on about 2.8 billion euros' ($4.25 billion Cdn) worth of U.S. steel, agricultural and other products, including bourbon, peanut butter, cranberries and orange juice."
Perhaps you should promote your fine maple syrup more over here in Europe so you won't be as dependent on the US anymore as a market for your main export product. I know it's very good but most people here in Europe don't know it or never tried it.

It's not our main export product. These are our top 10.
Maple syrup is exported to over 50 countries already, but the vast majority is to the US. I'm all for expanding markets. Europe seems to get very little of it because of restrictions. This may change however.
This link shows top maple products export destinations. Notice it is increasing every year.
