I see they are associated with Nova Scotia and that's too bad. I know my dog and I wouldn't like them. We are basically looking for a summer place and a water view would be ideal.
How about St John in New Brunswick? Anywhere else where it would be scenic with cooler summers (mostly 70's)?
I understand by mid July they are gone but thats half my summer.. I'm not fond of mosquitoes either..
Blackflies and mosquitos exist everywhere, except in the urban areas--mostly. Anyway, I've encountered both in all provinces. They are not unique to Nova Scotia--here's northern Ontario's take:
Seriously, don't worry. If you plan to make your home in remote, off-the-grid areas of northern Ontario or Quebec, you'll encounter them. So use bug spray. Anyplace else, you might meet them, but they won't be pests if you use bug spray. And it's been years since I used bug spray.
The O/P may find this site useful. Scroll down to the territory mapping clickys for each state (blue) and province (red) including Mexico (green) of the common insects found in each.

You can still do that. You just need to be more judicious about searching out the right location. Find yourself a place very close by the seashore that always has a constant, steady wind that always exceeds 3 or 4 miles an hour (that's a very mild breeze for humans and dogs) or more. Mosquitoes can only fly at speeds up to a maximum of 3 miles an hour, blackflies, noseeums and gnats even less. Like most other small insects they can't fly well in even mild gusts from off-shore without getting blown to kingdom come so they tend to hang out in places where wind is blocked and there is always slow air circulation. If you find a windy place you would still need to install window/door screens and would need fans inside the dwelling to create a wind indoors. Be warned though that as soon as you wander away from the vicinity of the windy shoreline you will need the bug spray.
