The late American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur Jimmy Buffett claimed to have roots in Newfoundland and Labrador. I wonder if his songs about life on the beach and the waters of Florida and the Caribbean warmed the hearts of Canadians during the long winter months.

I didn’t know that! RIP. It’s super common to have a Newfoundlander parent or grandparent here in Ontario, and from what I understand, many places in Canada. I suppose many Newfoundlanders might have gone to the United States as well during the same time periods. Thanks for sharing!

I read on Wikipedia that Buffet got the love for sailing and the water from his Newfoundland grandfather who was a steamship operator. The love for the ocean is reflected in his music.

The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico flowed through Jimmy’s veins from birth. He was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi to parents who worked for a shipbuilding firm. They moved to Mobile, Alabama when he was a child. He played the bars of the Gulf Coast before he became famous. Despite his countercultural image, he was a college graduate and a fraternity member.
Buffett had a Catholic education, and although he left the Church, traces of it remained in his serious songs, where he acknowledges that people fall short and suffer the consequences.

Makes sense there’s been a lot of migration across the border in the Atlantic area. Sounds similar to people here in Ontario with family in Michigan or people with French Quebec roots in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

In the opposite direction, I remember reading that the area around Lunenburg, NS has more of an East Coast US style accent, dropping the r like New York or Boston. I highly doubt it’s as prevalent nowadays but I wonder if any older folks from the area still have that unique dialect.
