That's the main difference between francophones outside Quebec and (some) Anglo-Quebecers.

For francophones in Manitoba or Ontario or Nova Scotia, it was never about not having to learn English. It was about not losing their French. They were always fine with learning English to interact with anglophones and with wider society when it was required.

Speaking of suppression isnt that what todays Quebec is doing to not only the Anglos but any visible minority or religious group?
France lost a war, if I recall correctly, in 1763. There was nothing meek about the fight.

Something about Montcalm and Wolfe, on the Plains of Abraham? I took up jogging there for the first time while visiting Quebec from the New York area, but I digress.

Losing a war has consequences. Just ask Japan or the "Palestinians." Or the Germans for that matter.

Surely you can come up with something more solid than your ancient perceptions and viewpoints of some past Anglo boogymen.

Not perceptions and viewpoints. History.

Including that of my family.

"Allowed"? Well, short of massacring everyone or deporting them all, what could they do?

As I mentioned they already tried the latter with Acadians. As for present-day Quebec, if you're paying attention I've already mentioned why the culture subsisted there but it was more the result of a calculation by the British than a desire to see it thrive. (French was *tolerated* in Quebec provided it didn't get in the hair of the British who worked and settled there.)

Outside of Quebec where political and demographic imperatives were not at play, French was most definitely suppressed under both the British régime and during the first century of Canada's existence post-Confederation.

Even so, as I mentioned above it's hard to completely eradicate an entrenched culture. The Canadian government attempted to eradicate indigenous cultures in an infinitely more savage and ruthless way than they did with francophones, and while indigenous groups took a major hit, a lot of their culture is still alive today.

There is no suporession of minorities or religious groups in Quebec. You will see more burkas and hasidic Jews walking around mtl more than any other city in Canada. You are making a mountain out of a mole hill.
