I have been there
It is a very interesting place historically as that is believed to be the first European landing site in the Americas from around 1000 AD, almost 500 years before Columbus. They have some reconstructed turf houses there that they believe that the Vikings used to live in. Parks Canada hires some actors to play Viking roles and try to imagine what life was like there. Nearby to the reconstructed turf houses is the actual archaeological site where they discovered the artifacts. It just looks like several grassy mounds after over a thousand years of erosion though.
It is definitely worth a visit for anyone who has the chance
To me, it is the equivalent of Custer Battlefield. There is no evidence perceptible to the layman, we just take their word for it that this the place.. They keep adding more modern man-made things to draw tourists.
I would love to see the place. The story of Vikings in North America is a fascinating one. There must be more sites. No doubt the Vikings must have explored the Saint Lawrence as welland maybe as far south as the Northeast US too. What’s most fascinating is that they gave up and never returned. For hundreds of years Columbus got credit for something that the Vikings did almost 500 years previous. The big difference of course is that Spain had the resources to stay and make it work and the Vikings did not.
Bit of a brutal journey to get there as its about as remote as you can get just to see some mud mounds,= https://www.britannica.com/place/LAnse-aux-Meadows If i was heading that way i'd call it a day in Gros Morne park.
