I agree with UL ....... in Canada it is for sure anything and everything in all professional areas, in all walks of life - it wouldn't be possible to point out a few particular professions as "common" professions for Sikhs any more so than you could for Catholics.

It was quite common in the 60's to see them occupying security firm roles.

The dockyard commissionaires at Esquimalt's RCN dockyard for instance were predominantly Sikhs.

Many Sikhs immigrated to Canada after WWII due to having performed admirably in every role imaginable from paratroopers to agents dropped behind Japanese lines in the far east. My own FIL dropped many of them from the belly of Liberators after flying the "Hump" to get them into enemy territory. They, along with Gurkhas have a reputation for fearlessness in battle.

Canada's current minister of defence is a Sikh who has been decorated for serving in Afghanistan. His final rank was as Lieutenant Colonel. He was also a former detective with the Vancouver Police Force investigating gang activity.

Sikhs occupy all strata of employment within Canada.

The gentleman I favour as my periodontist is a young Sikh.

Sikhs have been noted for being very sharp witted, quick thinkers and humble heroes in other ways too. This incident happened 3 years ago here in BC when a Sikh farmer skillfully used his unfurled turban to rescue a girl at imminent risk of battering and drowning as she was being rapidly swept away by the extremely dangerous, icy cold, swift rushing, sucking whirl-pool laden waters of the Thompson River.

Working in Toronto's financial district, they seem to be vastly outnumbered by their Hindu bredrens.

In Mississippi, some of them own convenience stores.

Nikki Haley, a former South Carolina governor, came from a Sikh family buy converted to Christianity.

In recent years in Canada, many Sikhs seem to have gotten into long-distance trucking. That's mostly where you see them outside of the major metro areas where they are concentrated (mostly Vancouver and Toronto).

In the U.S. people from India in general seem to be quite present even in small rural towns where they work in places like convenience stores, Subway sandwich shops, motels, etc. I say "work" but in most cases my sense is that they actually own these businesses and aren't just employees there. Unless they are kids working in their parents' business.

If you do some further research on her background (I did) you'll find her parents initially moved from India to Vancouver Canada, her father was a university professor and her mother was both a lawyer and a teacher. They moved to the states when her father was offered a position in a university there and Nikki was later born in South Carolina and her mother started up her own entrepreneurial business there.

Mouldy, Nikki isn't really what you could call a full convert to Christianity but is more of a dual-faith practitioner. When Nikki Randhawa married Michael Haley they celebrated the wedding with both Sikh and Methodist ceremonies and Nikki still attends both Sikh and Methodist worship services at temple and church. On paper she identifies as a Christian for her republican political purposes.

I don’t know anything about Sikhism, but maybe their religion is flexible in that regard.
