I don't see how canadians can complain that americans pay less for gas. The reason you pay so much more is for your "free healthcare" and other socialist programs. Same way with europe. Take a look at wikipedia and compare the amount of taxes americans pay compared to canadians or brits or anyone in europe for that matter. I get tired of america bashing. Yeah its all our fault that gas prices are higher because all of us americans ride around in suvs. Youll never see a canadian riding around in an suv. Its time for other countries to take responsibility for their problems instead of faulting the US. If you pay higher gas prices than we do you have no one to blame but yourselves. We dont control your governments policies. You do.

Too funny! Have you ever been to Canada? "Compact living style" does not accurately describe many Canadian cities.

There's no blaming of the US going on. Everyone is mocking how the world is coming to an end at $4 a gallon for the US, when the rest of the world has already been there and moved on. Suck it up, move on.

I guess my question here would be not so much about the difference of gas price, but whether Canada is built on the same car dependency as US.
I've recently told to a friend here in US, who was trying to cheer himself up with "even higher prices for gas in Europe," that for Europeans it really doen't matter all that much. They don't need cars to make it from work to home in the same manner as Americans do. European cities are planned and built differently comparably to American ones, so for Europeans public transportation is a functional thing that excludes the car dependence. Walking five-six blocks from the undreground station to a bus stop takes five minutes, where in US "five-six blocks" might mean good half an hour of walking under tropical rain.
So if Canadian cities are built in more European way, with reliable train/bus connection between towns, then the rising gas prices wouldn't be as devastating for Canadians as for Americans.

That would be correct if your assumption was correct. But your assumption is absolutely incorrect, and therefore so is your conclusion.

What assumption exactly?
I don't make any assumptions about Canada, since I didn't travel too much over there.

You mean moved on like this?:

Or perhaps you meant like this?:

Looks like your "blame America 1st" mantra isn't cuttin' it.

Wow, my first personal attack since posting on City Data.

Just for the record I am NOT Canadian but live in the U.S., quite happily so. I can see how that might have not been clear in my post.

As for my comparison of U.S. cities like Los Angeles and Seattle to Canadian cities like Vancouver and Montreal, obviously I was generalizing based on the cities I have actually been to and what I have read about others and how they have dealt with growth. L.A. and Seattle are generally considered to have substandard mass transit systems and Portland, Vancouver and certain other Canadian cities are generally considered to have superior one's. Somehow you ignored my positive comment about Portland, New York and San Francisco and read my entire post as some kind of Canada=good, U.S.=bad screed which is not what was intended at all. I am sure there are areas of Canada that are just as sprawly as certain areas in the U.S..
