Currently, Highway 9 crosses the Yukon River in Dawson City by ferry during the summer and ice bridge during the winter. During the spring breakup period, the crossing is closed and there is no way across. A permnant bridge was proposed in 2004, but was never built. Therefore, a permnant bridge should be constructed to carry Highway 9 traffic across the Yukon River in Dawson City. Something like this was done with the construction of the Deh Cho Bridge on the Yellowknife Highway in 2012. Also, a similar bridge carrying Highway 9 over the Yukon River in Dawson City should also be built as an iconic landmark for the city.

Maybe in another 30 or 40 years it might be feasible if the population increases considerably between now and then, but a bridge crossing the river there is certainly a nice idea for the future. At the present time it isn't at all feasible, it's unaffordable, which is the reason why any previous proposals for a bridge there have not been followed through on.

Yukon Territory is the least populated province/territory in Canada and it has only two main industries - mining and seasonal tourism - and the Dawson region itself has less than 1,400 permanent residents. Whitehorse has the majority of the Yukon's population and is a more important city, but a cost effective bridge across the river to connect Hwy 9 to Dawson is desirable. But at least Dawson has an airport and the people there aren't stranded during the spring ice break up when access across the river isn't possible.

My native gold mining buddy and I have a tight window every spring to get heavy equipment across the river to his mining play. As far as tourism, any gorge should start with a people tram????!! Leave the vehicles on one side and shoot across the gorge. !!

Connecting Dawson City with Highway 9 with a permnant bridge would allow easier emergency vehicle access across the Yukon River.

That's very true. A permanent bridge across the river would make it a lot more convenient and faster for everybody to cross the river, not only emergency vehicles. It's an observation that you wouldn't get any arguments about from anyone.

But the fact remains, the kind of bridge that would need to be engineered to endure river ice break-up is still not affordable yet.

Fortunately there is the airport and air ambulance if needed, and Dawson has excellent Fire and Emergency Departments and a very efficient 24/7 well staffed Community Hospital in the event of emergencies.

The other bridges that have been built across the Yukon River have already been built to deal with ricer ice breakup, so a Highway 9 bridge in Dawson City can be built.

Of course it can be built. Nobody has said that a Highway 9 bridge in Dawson City can't be built, just that it won't be built in the foreseeable future.

Are you having difficulties understanding the reasons you were given for why it won't be built?

Another reason to build a bridge on Highway 9 in Dawson City would be to have trucks carry freight across the river during the spring breakup and fall freeze up periods as this highway also goes to Alaska. It is very expensive to have to haul freight to communities along the highway by plane and a good reason why the Deh Cho Bridge was built on the Yellowknife Highway over the Mackenzie River. Much cheaper to haul freight by truck than by plane, especially if an airport can only handle small planes.
