In the Quebec part of Canada, there is the name Michel, which is a man's first/given name.

Is it pronounced mee-shell?

Is it the French version of Michael?

Michel, a boy, and Michele, a girl, have names that sound the same to the ears of an English speaker, like the English girl Michelle. But I think the French can hear a difference between Michel/Michele.

French names are often feminized by adding a terminal -e, which is silent, but can change the sound of preceding letters.
boy Jean = nasalized /zhaw/. Girl Jeanne = /zhunn/.
boy Francois = /fran-swah/, girs Francoise = /fran-swaz/

Yup. That graph makes sense.

Most Sandrines I know here in Quebec are between the ages of 15 and 25.

Whoops. I had a professor in graduate school with that name and I pronounced it "Mikel" as did all my classmates.

The one I came across is in her 40s. Sandrine Bisson. I don't know how well she is known in Quebec.
