Montreal Canadiens superstar legend Guy Lafleur has passed away at the age of 70.

This is a huge deal here in Quebec. TV and radio stations have pre-empted their programming to broadcast tributes.

Here is a big fan of his, Viggo Mortensen (Arangorn in The Lord of the Rings) introducing Guy Lafleur. Mortensen grew up in Watertown NY and watched hockey games on Canadian TV as a kid. He even learned French because of his Habs and Lafleur fandom, and worse a Montreal jersey with Lafleur's number 10 on the back when filming The Lord of the Rings.

Will Quebec lower their flag to half-staff for him?

I don’t know about all of Quebec, but I’m sure many will there and elsewhere in the country. He is a legend to French and English Canadians alike.

I still remember that great mane of hair flying out behind him as he skated.

Being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, I've never liked the Montreal Canadiens. Hockey fans will understand why. But I can certainly respect individual players on the Canadiens. Guy Lafleur was one of those. He was an exciting player, he was a treat to watch, and he made his mark on the game.

Rest well, M. Lafleur. You've earned it.

There are currently discussions between the Quebec government and his family about a state funeral.

Quebec is also considering naming Highway 50 as "Autoroute Guy-Lafleur".

It runs between the Outaouais region and Montréal, and right by his hometown of Thurso.

He is probably one of the most famous people to come out of this region.

A great hockey player and a role model for young kids. On the other hand, smoking in the locker room between periods was probably not a good idea. A state funeral ? Maybe.

I grew up a Leafs fan but the 70’s Habs were incredible. RIP.
