I have always liked:

Regina: rhymes with fun!

Subtly naughty.

Here was your answer to that.

The same type of people offended by this probably want to ban the Grand Theft Auto games and raise the age to get a drivers licence to 18. I’ll bet a lot of the people writing letters to city council about this have little joy in their own lives so they get angry when they see other people trying to experience it

Here in Ontario it’s the retirees that seem to be in the “shut it down” camp. There used to be a bar strip near St Catharines called Port Dalhousie where young people would go to party until the houses got all bought up and people started filing noise complaints and got bylaw to shut all the bars down. Been dead for the past 15 years. Now the same type of people are doing the same thing in Wasaga Beach, buying condos on the beach in a party town and then complaining about young people and the noise they make.
Interesting.

Well, I do live on the west coast. Our older types, me included are pretty laid back. A lot of the old hippy attitude still exists here.

That said, as wild and free thinking as I am, I kind of agree with cdnirene. I may find the jokes slightly humorous, albeit childish, but when doing an ad campaign for a city, I'd shy away from anything like this. For a product, well, you have the clients go ahead.

Oh god, maybe I'm turning into a male Karen.

Well, this certainly got people talking about Regina, which was the point after all.

It did, but did it make people want to visit? This strategy can work for a physical product. You put the name into someone's head, when they shop, they remember the name, perhaps not the context, but are then more likely to buy that product over another that they have no name association with. The purpose was to get people to visit Regina. I'm not sure it achieved that.

I was very interested in advertising when I was younger, so much so that I took courses etc and did very well in them. My interest is still there.

For me, one of the BEST advertisements for tourism, was Newfoundland's from a few years ago.

They did a series of them. Here's one you might remember. It's just class all the way.

I don't know. I didn't know "the city that rhymes with fun" is an old joke. I've never heard it. I think it shows a playful side to take an old joke and turn it back on yourself. People will remember it. If you've never heard of Regina, you can't visit either. It would be interesting to see actual statistics as to whether advertising actually makes much of a difference to cities like Winnipeg or Regina. There aren't any mountains like Vancouver, it's not quaint in the way Newfoundland is, so there's not much left to do but make fun of yourself. Manitobans do that all the time. Tourists aren't standing in line for either city and never will. But I can see "Regina" sticking in people's heads so that if they can't afford to go to other places, they might say, why don't we check out Regina?

If it were me, I'd definitely push the prairies beauty in ads. Also lots of cultural things that don't exist in other parts of the country. Onion domed churches, the Eastern European /Ukrainian history connection. I'd have to do more research to add to that, but certainly there is something to draw from.

I do remember when I worked on VIA Rail, coming back from Winnipeg, Regina etc, having people awed by the mountains of Alberta and BC. What some might not know, is that people who have lived with mountains all their life, are awed by the flatness and expanse of the prairies. I used to get up before sunset on the train, and sit in the Park Car having a coffee watching the sun come up over the flat fields. It was spectacular and an image that could be used in an ad.

That's would be the direction I would go.

The only thing I've ever heard a lot of is why would people want to go to Winnipeg/Manitoba. To which Manitobans have the ready reply: "We like to keep out the riff-raff."

As a flatlander, while stunning, the mountains get in the way of the view. They are so beautiful my eyes hurt with the looking of it. I've always had to close my eyes after a few hours of mountains. But I will also admit that I hate the winters here more with every passing year. I've mostly only heard the prairies being referred to as something to drive through just as fast as you can, even by prairie people.
