T.O. doesnt have any Canada day spirit because more than half of the population are immigrants and they are attached more to their old countries than Canada.
Me and my wife have just returned from seeing her family in Mississauga, Toronto, Pickering and Courtice. We had a great week although not as good as in the past because the USA dollar is not even worth $1 C anymore.
None the less, as we celebrated Canada Day, I noticed that Canadians just are not into their day like we are July 4th. We went to a Canada Day gathering sponsored by a country radio station at the lakefront in Toronto and the lack of spirit and flag waving was very obvious. And driving around town, you do not even see 1/5th of the flags you see here on July 4th. Why is this? Is it because it was on a Tuesday? Or was it because Canadians are not allowed to buy beer on Canada Day (it is kind of funny that only the government can sell beer in Canada- a "progressive" country otherwise)? Or is it something else I am missing?
This isn’t the first time I’ve heard that Canada Day is quite the low-key affair in Toronto.
However, I wouldn’t put the blame on immigrants, almost all of whom are very proud to be Canadians in addition to having some residual loyalty to their countries of origin (which is totally normal, BTW).
As someone else mentioned, had you driven a few hours east to Ottawa you would have had a very different experience. According to many, celebrations in Ottawa (perhaps not the official ones, but what you see and hear on the streets) can sometimes even border on the jingoistic.
Well, there were actually 100,000 (in a metro area of about 750,000) people out for a Canada Day concert by Simple Plan last week in Quebec City.
But generally speaking, you’re right. For obvious political reasons, Canada Day celebrations pretty much everywhere in Quebec very are low-key (sometimes impossible to find). Even in Montreal, Canada Day is dwarfed by the St-Jean-Baptiste festivities held exactly one week earlier.
