I got 11. I can't believe I missed Nunavut as the 3rd territory.

Another tough question: who is the first Canadian-born PM?

Another one: who were the 5 Canadian players on the ice (bonus for the goalie), at the time of the winning goal, 1987 Canada Cup. Two of them are fairly easy.

A fun quiz of Canadiana for Americans and Canadians alike.

Answers below.

1. Where does the name Canada originate? I know somehow it's "Kanata" but forget if that's a FN tribe or something else.

2. Where was the first European settlement in North America? Vikings in Newfoundland? John Cabot?

3. What is the Canadian $1 coin called? Loonie for loons.
[/b]
4. What is Canada’s official national sport? Hockey

5. Where can North America’s largest diamond deposits be found? Nunavut

6. What province established the first universal healthcare system? Saskwatchewan under Douglas.

7. What national symbol appears on the Canadian flag? Too easy, maple leaf. (even I know that and I'm a Yank.)

8. Name the longest river in Canada? McKenzie

9. What is Canada’s national animal?Beaver, I started a thread on that

10. What is the traditional drink of Newfoundland? Screech

11. Name the only officially bilingual province. New Brunswick But doesn't NU count, it's trilingual?

12. How many provinces and territories are there in Canada? 13

13. Name the battle which caused Canada to switch from French to British control. Montcalm-Wolfe, Plains of Abraham

14. Who scored the winning goal for Canada at the 1972 Canada-USSR Hockey summit Series? Don't know

Extra Credit: Who was that winning goal scored on? Don't know

I whacked off the answers so as not to cheat. I got 11 1/2, but I know very little about Canada.

Guessing it's Bennett but again I don't know much about Canada. Maybe Borden, Meaghan or King, but I'm adding the requisite number of years to Canada's year of independence. Again my knowledge of Canada is sorely lacking.

I got the wrong national sport, diamond deposit location, flat out didn't know who scored the winning goal for Canada at the 1972 Canada-USSR Hockey summit Series, didn't know what "Kanata" was but knew that was the root of the name (thus the "1/2" point).

John Abbott is the first native-born PM.

Nunavut does not count as a province.

The winning goal in 1972 was scored by Paul Henderson.

Pretty sure the goalie was Vladislav Tretiak.

You're correct....Paul Henderson scored on Tretiak.

The largest diamond mine in Canada is in the Northwest Territories....
however the question is largest diamond deposit...still could be NWT.

I doubt it was "Canada" at that point, unless you count a colonial province. I was thinking more of a PM born at or after the time of Dominion status.

Does NWT or Yukon? I know my Dad's old work number (he died in 1973) was (212) YUkon 6-1290.
