- Oh happy day that i came to the land of law and order!!!!! the minute i arrived i felt the city ticking like clockwork and i felt i had been canadian at birth instead of at twenty five. There is a reason why some immigrants assimilate so well in canada, and never look back. one of them is they KNOW the difference between the half assed way of doing things (back home) and the fruitful result achieved when everyone is observing the rule book. i am not knocking any other country, but following the rules... really takes the stress out of menial tasks.

- Tolerance and respect of people from all races. Enough said. Oppressing foreigners is not an every day duty of a Canadian. It is their nature to leave things be. Sure, it would be nice of they would learn the language. and many canadians do comment that they feel the immigrants should learn english. but sercretly i dont think canadians want the immigrants to learn the language because deep down they know these immigrants were selected by a rigorous program and they are the best and the brightest of the other countries... ergo promotion for Chang and goodbye Dave.. Chang was making half what you were making anyway.

- The varied activities available. I have been like a kid in the candy store for the past 4 years now. busy watching plays, dancing, eating sushi, eating butter chicken... or whichever ethnic food is available to me. Just going to the supermarket and giggling in the Isles at the new junk foods. wall climbing, curling, ice skating... festivals.. it doesnt get boring around here.

- The land of opportunity, especially for women. I love my job. I may work too hard, and am some days more appreciated than others.... but this opportunity would not have been available to me back home.. probably because i am a woman. on the other hand, i feel male immigrants are pushed into manual labour no matter how well qualified they are. I am sorry to say that.

-Cars are cheap here. I adore cars. I am on my third car since i got here. I want to try them all!!! am currently driving a sweet little Nissan Z350. my sweetheart. you are complaining about tobacco and alcohol taxes... car taxes back home are 100 percent. this is an environmental measure to prevent people of disposing of cars every 3 years like americans!!!

Cons:
- It was minus twelve outside as i got in and my room is above the garage... you know what that means.... brrrrrrr.
- We may be well cushioned here in canada, but very few families can survive on a single income. That means my butt will go to work till i retire. So i guess the woman-opportunity crap is a trap really. lol.
- Going to the hair salon should cost 1/3 of what it does. its way too expensive... and you wonder why north americans are not well groomed? it just costs too much!
- Canadian men are good looking, but they choose to look like crap. Other countries have ugly men that dont even bother trying. Canadian men are gorgeous, but they still choose to look like lumber jacks and construction workers.. i guess thats who they are anyway lol. but i lament the missed opportunities of what they could really look like. they are prettier than the women!
- Car insurance..... screw that. insurance should be per car not per person.
Just wondering, which country did you move to Canada from?

I'll have to think of a list of pros and cons but in reading the posts so far...

...readers should be clear that Canada has a universal/gov't health care INSURANCE system. It's far from being all government controlled - though they do control the funding.

We have private doctors owning their own practices and you can go to any general practitioner you wish. I believe BC, Quebec and Ontario all have private clinics/hospitals of some sort.

Wow I LOVE people that put as a pro the Canadian multi-ethnic and multicultural approach and then bash Quebec or separatists. Last time I checked there was freedom of speech in Canada (put that as a pro).

Hard to have your cake and eat it too.
Cornerguy1, don't you know that to have your cake and eat it too is the Canadian dream. All the coddling by the state without the totalitarian consequences.

What's wrong with having the best of both worlds - a decent social welfare system coupled with significant personal and economic freedom?

Why must a free, prosperous economy automatically go hand-in-hand with Darwinist, survival-of-the-fittest economics and savage capitalism?

Why is caring society and wanting to preserve a non-obscene gap between rich and poor automatically associated with Marxism-Leninism, communism, Joseph Stalin, the loony left and/or totalitarianism?

Because not every province or country received bribes in the form of "transfer payments" to fund social programs... In reality, there are tradeoffs between social programs and taxes. Or freedoms and responsibilities.

Well, isn't Quebec a "nation" that wants to be its own country if the funds stop coming from the "Rest of Canada?" That's what I referred to when I mentioned "country."

Nevertheless, I love Quebec and think Quebec contributed greatly to Canada. I just wish they didn't have a gun to our heads claiming to want to separate if the funds stop flowing...
