. Not to mention in general, the fact that for men at least, it helps in getting a bit away from the day to day life worries, relieving the stress from the workplace etc. It's almost the only "elixir" allowed and they "regulate it.
What makes you think that only men have stress in the workplace and need an escape from this?
If booze is expensive because the government is trying to prevent people from drinking, this country is more F'd up than I thought. Though I can see it.
Alcohol and tobacco are taxed to the hilt partly because of our health system: there are many medical issues (read: expenses) related to the consumption of these products. Sure, mild wine consumption may hold some health benefits but the problem is that most people do not consume it "mildly". Plus I recently read that they have now found BPA in wine, so they may end up contributing some forms of cancer to the stuff.
From here in Vancouver, compared to NYC housing is cheaper, but not that much. Fresh fruit and vegetables and flowers are definately lower. Transportation is about the same but NYC is more efficient, but Vancouver is getting there with SkyTrain and we have many taxes on gas.
Going out cost is less, but service is not near as good as NYC.
How many free things are there to do - I'd give NYC a thumbs up on that. Especially the Bronx Zoo.
What is great is - leaving town takes less time to get anywhere, including skiing sailing and golfing within 1 hour of downtown. You can't do that in NY.
The air is cleaner but I think it's the rainforest so, if you don't like dreary days it can be depressing.
Vancouver only has a Triple A baseball team, no Yankees or Mets.
They are both diverse.
