agreed. an exchange program between your canadian university and its US college partners would be ideal.

at UBC, they had exchange programs worldwide. for those that were accepted into the program, the student would pay their 'home' tuition. very attractive, i would say.

you pay your home tuition, get to experience the US college experience, with little risk.

i'm thinking of going to UCLA for grad school. Still trying to figure out if I can afford it or not.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of 'curious canadian guide to US colleges'? I heard it was pretty good but they seem to be sold out everywhere. If anyone has a copy i'd be willing to buy it off you used...

Never heard of it, nor does it exist on any Internet search engines. You sure you got the name right?

But OMG the fees at UCLA

Default www.d.umn.edu

In Duluth, possibly because we're only a couple hours from the Canadian border, we have many Canadian students who attend the University of Minnesota - Duluth (http://d.umn.edu). I am not sure about the specifics in terms of financial aid or grants. I do know that Minnesota does have reciprocity with Manitoba - I wanted to attend school in Winnipeg a while ago but I remember one of the conditions was that you don't qualify for any aid from either country - meaning you'd have to be pretty darn rich to pull this off. I've looked at moving to Canada for years and it appears that you either need a lot of money, a lot of higher education that is so specific that nobody else has the same credentials, or have family already living in Canada. I've been kind of looking at this since 1996 and it's not getting any easier. Too bad.

Duluth are you sure you were looking at Canada's immigration site?? Cooks, chefs, plumbers, nurses, radiation technologists - a lot of the eligible skilled workers require less than four years education . . . and none of the professions are rocket science.

From Instructions on which skilled worker applications are eligible for processing

... skilled worker who has had at least one year of experience* in one or more of the following occupations within the last ten years:

*Experience is defined as continuous full-time or equivalent part-time paid work experience

UCLA is I think the most popular public school in the country, only 21.7% of people who applied for undergrad got in for 2009.

and yup it costs a lot. gotta pay to play
