Hi,

We're a family of 4 (me, wife and 2 girls age 6 and 1) from India and we intend to move to Vancouver after getting p.r. soon.

We would appreciate if we could get some pointers on cost of living in vancouver and also schooling..like in which area are schools better ?

I am also looking at investing some amount into any businesses available. Any suggestions ?

Also is Montreal a good place to live in, compared to Vancouver ?

Thanks in advance.

Montreal is a great place to live.
Rents are lower but are climbing. Check out French newspapers like "La Press". Craigslist tends to have high rental offers. You will have to send your children to French schools and you will need at least a very functional grasp of French to work. Be prepared to freeze during parts of January and Frebruary. Summers are high heat and humidity. This year so far has been perfect though. You could check out Ottawa too. Same climate.

I imagine the 7-11 reference was made partially as a joke due to the fact that many small neighbourhood stores are owned and run by recent immigrants.

7-11 is a franchised chain of stores which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The cost of such stores is likely to be fairly high.

If the idea of buying a small store appeals to you, then try this real estate web site which has listings from various areas of Canada. You should be able to get an idea of the dollars involved. Don't forget, there is more involved than just the purchase price of the store; you also need money for insurance, licences, inventory, etc.

Most major cities in Canada have Indian communities; the larger the city, generally the larger the Indian community. However, don't be afraid of branching out to some of the smaller cities.

The major difference between Montreal and Vancouver is climate. Vancouver has a temperate climate with very mild winters; it rarely snows. Montreal, as another poster mentioned, has a cold winter with a signifigant amount of snow.

One thing you may want to consider before choosing Montreal or another city in the province of Quebec is potential language difficulties. Quebec has a very large number of French-speaking citizens and the official language of government is French. There may also be requirements for your children to attend French-language schools.

Good luck.

I have started some paper work with an immigration agent for Canada and expected to land in there by Jan 2012. Can anyone please throw some light about the social life in cities like Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Vancouver? I mean the social life in general.....Indian community as well as other people staying there. How well is it possible to get along with everyone? One more thing...how much does the snow affect the social life?

There are fewer outdoor activities in the winter of course like sitting outside on the patio, but life still goes on and the restaurants, bars, etc. are still full and people hold parties in their homes. Basically, things go on as usual - just inside.

Also, most cities in Canada hold winter carnivals or festivals for a week or two which are often big outdoor parties in the cold and snow. People just dress warmly and these events are actually a lot of fun. Especially for people from other countries who have never seen that sort of thing.
