There was an anti-smoking ad where a young girl, remembering her deceased Grandmother fondly says "My Grandmother said YOU NEVER KNOW WHICH CIGARETTE GAVE YOU THE CANCER". That line stuck in my head, and I heard those words in my head every single time I lit up after seeing it. I know the commercial has to be at least seven years old - because that's how long it's been since I smoked my last cigarette.

I realized it truly was like playing Russian Roulette. I decided if I was going to die one day, I was okay with that, but I was NOT going to go out gasping for air because of something I HAD DONE TO MYSELF.

First for the record I rarely smoke and agree it's a bad idea, for a wide variety of reasons.

That said, far as I know, smoking causing cancer hasn't been definitively proven, despite being highly likely, many (MANY) people smoke and never get cancer, and some of the "facts" on those pics simply aren't true (eg "smoking decreases stamina".....uhh no, it's a stimulant, so by definition does the opposite).

I recall some in school that said "SMOKING IS GLAMOROUS" and showed pics of things like used ashtrays or old wrinkled people smoking :gag:

Smoking has been definitively proven to cause cancer and not just lung cancer

Also, smoking absolutely decreases stamina....stamina has nothing to do with stimulants or depressants it has to do with the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood and by definition smokers have less oxygen carrying capacity than nonsmokers....

Not too many smokers running marathons.....requires stamina
