"The public should be vigilant about persistent coughs as they could be a sign of lung cancer, a new government advertising drive is warning.
The campaign, which is being run in TV, radio, print and online media, recommends people with coughs lasting three weeks visit their GP."
Persistent coughs are also symptomatic of lymphoma, particularly Hodgkin's. I have a 2 week rule - if anything in your body is doing something it's not supposed to for 2 weeks, get it checked out.
It goes without saying, a cough lasting over 2 weeks, unless you know it is alergies needs to be checked. We have friends in Ca who both husband and wife had lung cancer. He caught it very : with just the removal of a very small part of his lung he was fine, that was over 10 years ago. His wife, let her cough go, by the time they did all the tests it was too late, she died about 4 months later. This was about 18 months ago. Yes, they were both X smokers, but it had been many years, maybe 10 or 15 since either had smoked and both had a family history of cancer.
Again, like everything else, the chances of the system being cancer are not all that great. A lot of things cause a persistant cough, but do get it checked. Caught in time, many cancers are 100% curable but left undetected and the results can be very different. Panicing isn't what you want to do, get the cough checked is what you should do.
My #4 son has never smoked. Had a persistent cough. Finally his wife convinced him to see a Dr. about it. Turns out he has esophageal reflux. Takes medication for it and everybody gets a good nights sleep.
