LONDON (Reuters) - A molecule found in a curry ingredient can kill esophageal cancer cells in the laboratory, suggesting it might be developed as an anti-cancer treatment, scientists said on Wednesday.

Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Center in Ireland treated esophageal cancer cells with curcumin -- a chemical found in the spice turmeric, which gives curries a distinctive yellow color -- and found it started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours.

Interesting and hopeful, but "a molecule found in a curry ingredient can kill esophageal cancer cells in the laboratory" does not exactly equate to "curry compound kills cancer cells." But again, here's hoping.

Yes there are a few tumor cookbooks out there. Turmeric is a biggie. But I'll tell you, it's hard to choke anything down during chemo, much less steamed broccoli coated in turmeric.

Torture.

Alternative treatment practitioners have known this for a long time. It takes SOOOOOOO long for allopathic doctors to catch up. *sigh*.

I'd much rather get surgery, chemo and radiation than depend on spices for my cancer treatment.

On the other hand, I don't want any chemo in my crock pot!

To completely and blindly embrace alternative medicines is plain foolish and irresponsible.

Chemo is effective, radiation is effective, surgery is also effective. I ended up using two out of the three (surgery and chemo) during the course of my cancer. All three are necessary in the battle.

My sister was able to get by with just surgery. Again neither one of us presented any risk factors for cancer.

Does further research need to happen to find a cure? Yes by all means.

I recently started taking curcumin and it helps with inflamation. I've been feeling pretty good. I hope it serves as a cancer preventative.

I went five for five. Radical surgery, intravenous chemo, spinal cord chemo, monoclonal antibody therapy and radiation therapy. I'm now in technical remission pending the next PET/CT scan in February, recovering from months of the above and expecting to win this battle!

Here is the kicker, the conventional methods worked, alternative medicines, I doubt your results would have been the same. Its a good feeling to wake up every morning knowing you beat this nasty disease.
