A recent study out of Switzerland indicates there might be an increased risk of certain blood cancers in people with prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields, like those generated from high-voltage power lines.

If you live in a house near one of these high-voltage power lines, a study like this one might make you wonder whether you should move.

But based on what we know now, I don't think that's necessary. We can never say there is no risk, but we can say that the risk appears to be extremely small.

'Scare Science'
The results of studies like this add a bit more to our knowledge of potential harmful environmental exposures, but they should also be seen in conjunction with the results of hundreds of studies that have gone before. It cannot be seen as a definitive call to action in and of itself.

I doubt they are, I think its more our food choices and health habits more than anything else, and maybe our family history as well....I would not let a power line dicate where I lived, esp if I loved my home and community, its silly to worry!

I wouldn’t worry about cancer as much as having those giant eyesores near my property. No thanks!

Note that the article didn't quote any numbers....Studies like this usually show really small differences between the study group and the control group, and you know you don't get the expected "5 heads" on every 10 flips of the coin-- there's variance around the true mean. This study may be just one of those "6 heads & 4 tails" trials.

I don't care about the power lines, but I'm putting my house up for sale cuz I just read that 95% of fatal car accidents occur within 25 miles of home! I gotta get out of here before it's too late.

We have walked away from several potential homes over the years due to overhead power lines, but only because they are ugly and block whatever view is available. Here where we bought 26 years ago, we have all utilities underground, and the view of the valley down below us and the mountains beyond are unobstructed. Whether cancer is an issue is surely debatable, but like the ugly sight, the perception of possible health risk lowers the value. Even if they do contribute to cancer, these days there are so many other causes or contributors to cancer that it's not even the tip of the iceberg. The California Proposition 65 product cancer warnings are on over 900 items commonly sold to the public.
