Exactly, I admit I shake my head at people who want to save $25 a month on their car insurance so much they will agree to this kind of monitoring. The information obtained in this fashion has many uses and the implications for your privacy rights is ominous. But, hey it sure is nice to get that $25 discount, right?
Along that line, I find a number of these "navigation systems" that most cars now have as standard equipment, are quite frustrating. What annoys me, is than many of them CANNOT be switched off. In other words, your car is being tracked, any and every time the ignition is switched on.....
I used Snapshot a few times in my past, it was AWESOME. First I shopped around to find the best price for my policy, and that was Progressive. So I was starting with the cheapest option to begin with. Then I plugged in snapshot and saved another 18% on top of the already low price. It was great.
I didn't alter my driving habits in any way other than to consciously avoid hard braking. That was it.
There was one period where my discount was only like 3% because during that time I had an extremely long commute and the device picked up on it. However, after I moved I got the device again and my discount was over 20% due to having a very short commute.

The small discounts being discussed are nowhere near enough to even consider the tradeoff of constant surveillance and the gathering of information that will surely be used against you at some point.
Update. Our rates have lowered greatly. My wife hardly ever drives. Her vehicle’s discount is $141. I commute to and from work and do the grocery shopping. My discount is $79. We aren’t driving less than before COVID-19. We’re both homebodies. I’m 51 and she’s 52 with health problems. We live less than a mile from the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, and several restaurants.

My rates were also lowered a good amount by State Farm. They probably just assume you're driving less, as most people are, because of COVID. I am driving somewhat less than I did before because I no longer make the short drive to the train station, but otherwise my driving habits have not changed.
They have never asked me to use a device that monitors my driving.
You brake heavily to avoid an accident? Accelerate just a tiny bit more than their liking? Yep, those incidences are being recorded.
Yep, same thing happened to my coworker. Also, driving after 10:00pm is considered dangerous.
