She lives in New Port Richey, FL and has no medical insurance, since she had to give up her job due to other health reasons. Then she started having mental problems (forgetting things, etc) and went to the hospital on the 14th, where she spent eight days in ICU and three MRIs before they discovered the mass in her head. The biopsy results just came back today.

She lives alone and is surrounded by friends, but I live in the PNW, and the rest of the family is scattered around the country. Her daughter from MI is with her now, but we have no idea what sort of caregiving support might be available in her area. We would like to keep her in her home, because her Corgi is her constant companion and we cannot imagine what may happen to her if they were separated.

Any suggestions or advice would be tremendously appreciated.

Thanks.

Does anyone have medical POA set up? If not, someone should do that ASAP. Is she still in the hospital or rehab now? The hospital's social services department probably needs to be assured she'll have access to appropriate care upon discharge. They can probably put her/daughter in contact with local care resources, though her options will be limited (and not ideal) if she doesn't have insurance or funds to pay for it.

in our situation, we (brothers/sisters) divided up
the time/distance to help. in my case, i was the
furthest away, so my schedule was once a month.

Thank you.

I am not aware of the POA status. Her daughter is setting up a go fund me site with some help from friends, now. She is still in the hospital, but we are hoping she will be released to go home soon.

Apparently she qualifies for fast track Social Security Disability based on that diagnosis. Once on SSDI I think she then qualifies for Medicare but it seems like that's after 24 months.

Lost my husband to GBM. I’m so sorry for your sister. One thing to note that I didn’t know about disability, there is a five month period where you don’t qualify. So my husband was diagnosed in April and his was going to start in October. And it was in very quickly okayed. My husband died three months after diagnosis, and it was very soon after that he got his approval letter. Which I then had to turn around and tell them to cancel it.

She can also seek Florida Medicaid, That should pay her medical bills, not sure if it can be backdated in FL, but it won't hurt to ask.

These activities need to begin ASAP. A long conference with the hospital social worker will answer the questions you have asked. The nature of this illness might be the deciding factor that gives you answers you need. I am so sorry she got this diagnosis. Take care.

If she's been in ICU for 8 days, my guess is someone in the hospital billing dept. is already working on those Medicaid forms, and knows the fast track procedure. Find that person. If her daughter is there, she could get a POA and track this down.
